Hoxton Art Gallery is proud to present their second exhibition which explores the resurgence of interest in painting amongst a new generation of artists. Combining the work of four talented young contemporaries the show presents a series of dynamic and compelling pieces driven by the materiality and action of painting. James Bowyer presents an investigation into primitive and naïve art, borrowing visual formulas from his knowledge of prehistoric mark making. With a post painterly use of line and colour George Amos harks to works by Barnett Newman, superseding this she peels back layers of paint to reveal mechanical and futuristic looking formations. With a new take on 60’s op art Rory McCartney references archaic book formats by slashing through geometric formulae with vivid marbling techniques whilst Ha Young Kim creates otherworldly hybrid scenes of bold shapes and lucid caricatures succinctly referencing Japanese Kawaii culture and science fiction narrative. Viewed together the four artists make a compelling case for the revival of painting in contemporary culture. Hoxton Art Gallery is a new commercial art gallery situated on Charlotte Road in Shoreditch. The gallery is run by Director Matthew Nickerson, Lydia Cowpertwait, Head of Gallery, and Fiona Neil, Head of Projects. Together they are fostering on-going relationships with new contemporaries through a strong curatorial programme consisting of group and solo exhibitions, as well as projects beyond the gallery walls.
